Energy storage is becoming one of the key pillars of the energy transition in Poland and across Europe. With the growing share of renewable sources — particularly solar and wind power — ensuring grid stability requires innovative solutions. Energy storage systems balance production fluctuations, enhance grid security and improve the profitability of renewable investments.
Poland’s energy storage market is evolving at a rapid pace, making it one of the fastest-growing in Europe. Comprehensive ‘one-stop’ solutions, including design, delivery and service, are increasingly popular. However, the sector still faces challenges such as high upfront costs, long payback periods, and regulatory hurdles, including complex permitting processes. Other critical aspects include standardisation and technological safety, particularly for large-scale systems.
The growth of this market depends on clear legal frameworks and support mechanisms to attract investors and facilitate financing. The industry also expects progress in local technical expertise, service networks and supply chains, which will strengthen Poland’s position in the renewable energy ecosystem.

Żarnowiec is currently home to the construction of Poland’s largest — and one of Europe’s largest — battery energy storage systems. Its planned capacity is approximately 263 MW, with an energy storage volume of 900–981 MWh. This major project, scheduled for completion in 2027, will play a key role in stabilising Poland’s national power grid.
The investment has secured a 17-year capacity market contract, highlighting its strategic significance. The location is no coincidence — the facility is being built near the Żarnowiec pumped-storage power plant and planned offshore wind farms, allowing for efficient integration of renewable energy sources into the grid.
The Żarnowiec project demonstrates how large-scale battery systems can support Poland’s energy transition and become a cornerstone for further renewable energy development in the country.

Photovoltaic technology is developing at a remarkable pace, and one of the most exciting research areas is perovskite cells. Scientists have achieved an efficiency of 27.5% for flexible perovskite modules — a result that only a few years ago seemed unattainable.
Perovskites stand out for their lightness, flexibility, and adaptability in locations where traditional silicon cells are less effective. At the same time, intensive work continues on tandem cells that combine perovskite and silicon. These hybrid solutions already exceed 30% efficiency, with laboratory records approaching 35%.
Such high figures pave the way for a revolution in photovoltaics — in the future, next-generation cells could replace traditional modules and ensure far more efficient use of solar energy.

Poland is preparing to launch its first floating solar power plant. The 2 MW installation will be built on the grounds of the Sośnica mine in Gliwice, partly located on a retention reservoir covering about 3 hectares.
Importantly, the farm will be integrated with an energy storage system, enhancing self-consumption and grid stability. The project will cover approximately 15% of the energy demand of local coal processing facilities — a strong example of repurposing post-industrial land for green energy production.
Another advantage is the use of solar trackers — systems that follow the movement of the sun to increase energy yield. This is the first investment of its kind in Poland, marking a step toward more innovative and efficient photovoltaic projects.

The authorities of Kraków are considering an innovative project to install photovoltaic panels along tram tracks and at tram stops in Nowa Huta. The proposed section covers 13.5 km of tracks and 38 stops, including key locations such as Plac Centralny, Rondo Czyżyńskie and Kombinat.
Preliminary estimates show that installing around 900 monocrystalline panels could generate nearly 420 MWh of electricity per year — enough to power part of the tram network, stop infrastructure and even a section of the depot.
The total investment cost is estimated at around PLN 1.5 million, with projected annual savings reaching €75,000, ensuring a quick return on investment. The project supports the city’s strategy for sustainable transport and improved air quality — particularly relevant given the introduction of the Clean Transport Zone in 2026.
Solar farms on post-mining and degraded lands
Poland has over 600 km² of degraded land requiring reclamation. Increasingly, instead of redeveloping these areas for industrial or agricultural purposes, they are being used for renewable energy installations, including photovoltaic farms.
Former open-pit mines and waste storage sites are proving ideal for solar power plants — they offer large areas, proximity to power grids and limited potential for other uses. A good example is a solar farm built on the site of a former lignite mine near Konin.
In regions like Greater Poland, post-mining areas are steadily transforming into valuable hubs for renewable energy development.

Nearly one-third of China’s land area consists of deserts and semi-deserts, making desertification a major ecological challenge. To combat this, the country is implementing innovative solutions — including large-scale photovoltaic systems.
Panels installed on arid land serve several purposes simultaneously:
they reduce water evaporation and promote vegetation recovery,
they act as wind barriers preventing sand displacement,
they generate clean energy supporting local communities.
A striking example is the 4 GW solar farm in the Taklamakan Desert, covering 76 km² and producing around 6.9 TWh of energy annually — enough to power millions of homes.
Plans are also underway for the so-called ‘Great Solar Wall’ — a 400 km-long chain of photovoltaic farms in Inner Mongolia, expected to generate up to 48 billion kWh of electricity annually by 2030.
These initiatives demonstrate that photovoltaics can serve not only as a source of clean power but also as an effective tool for environmental protection and landscape restoration.

With nearly 22 GW of PV capacity already installed in Poland, energy surpluses occur during peak production periods. Energy storage systems make it possible to capture surplus electricity and use it later — when panels stop producing. They are the key to a stable, efficient, and more energy-independent future.
Poland’s nearly 22 GW of installed PV power often leads to excess energy on sunny days, which the grid cannot always absorb. That is why energy storage systems are becoming an essential part of the national energy infrastructure.
They store surplus energy and release it when demand is high, helping to stabilise the grid and increase system flexibility. The development of energy storage is crucial to fully unlocking the potential of renewables — both for large-scale solar farms and small prosumer installations.
